FAQ (Canada)

Application

Can someone currently serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints apply for FSY?
  • Missionaries may apply with approval from their mission president. Additional interviews (live interviews via Zoom) are part of the hiring process. Mission presidents should be notified of this, and permission received in order for missionary applicants to participate in these interviews.
  • Missionaries would need to be released from their missionary service in time to attend the mandatory in-person training specific to their hired position.
  • Not all applicants will be interviewed.
  • Selection for leadership positions generally takes place between October and February; positions will be open until filled.
Can I apply for more than one position?

You may indicate in your application the position(s) which you are qualified for and willing to work. You only need to submit one application regardless of the number of positions you wish to be considered for.

Can I choose where or when I work?
  • FSY assigns staff to locations where they are most needed and does not consider location preferences or requests to work with specific individual(s) when making assignments.
  • If you have specified under Work Availability that you are not available during a certain week, FSY will not offer an assignment for that week.
  • Please consistently update your availability on your application and email fsyhiring@byu.edu anytime you change your availability.
  • Please be advised that individuals whose availability is or becomes low may not receive any assignments, and therefore not receive any pay, even if hired.
What does a typical day look like for a counselor?

FSY counselors help youth build faith in Jesus Christ and in His restored gospel and create a learning atmosphere where all can recognize and learn by the Spirit as the youth experience their week at FSY. The FSY Week at a Glance offers a look at the activities, interpersonal interactions, and spiritual growth FSY counselors are called upon to facilitate for youth participants.

What if my availability is outside of the "peak weeks" or is less than three weeks?

If your availability is outside of the "peak weeks" for FSY staffing needs, or becomes lower than you had originally planned, we still welcome your application, but please be advised that FSY session assignments are made according to program needs. Therefore, if your availability is or becomes low, you may not receive any assignments, and therefore not receive any pay, even if you are hired. Please see the home page to view peak weeks.

Individuals with at least four available weeks will be given preference in scheduling. Those with lower availability will receive session assignments later or may receive no assignments at all.

Interviews

What should I do if I received an interview invitation but no available times are posted?

We frequently post new interview appointments online, so check back periodically to find a time that will work with your schedule:

  1. Log in to the FSY Employment Center.
  2. Select Interview Self-Scheduler.
  3. Reserve an interview time.
  4. If you are unable to find an interview time that will work, please contact FSY Hiring at fsyhiring@byu.edu.
What does the in-person or Zoom interview entail?

If you are invited to an in-person or Zoom interview, use the link in the email to schedule an interview time. Applicants only need to complete one in-person or Zoom interview regardless of how many different positions they have applied for, except the Wellness Coordinator position, which always requires a separate interview.

  • Applicants applying for a position they have not previously worked will be invited to interview.
  • In-person or Zoom interviews will be conducted interactively with two or more members of the FSY Hiring Committee.
  • Most in-person or Zoom interviews last 40 minutes, depending on the position.
  • Please pay attention to any special instructions listed in the interview sign-up section.
  • Please note: Any interview rescheduling must be done at least two business days before the original interview date. If you are having difficulty making changes to your scheduled interview, please contact fsyhiring@byu.edu
  • If you are struggling to log onto your interview or find the room, please call 801-422-6229.
When will I know if I’ve been hired?

FSY plans to hire leadership staff for 2026 during the fall of 2025. However, FSY may continue to hire additional staff beyond that timeframe if needed. You should expect to hear back within 6 to 10 weeks of applying for a position, depending on which position you applied for.
